About this guide
History, regional variants, photosensor technology, compatible games, CRT requirements and preservation of Nintendo’s light gun.
4.1 Nintendo NES Zapper / Famicom Beam Gun
The NES Zapper is the Western NES accessory, commonly gray in the earliest North American release and later orange/red under US toy-gun color policy. Japan’s Famicom had a differently shaped Beam Gun accessory. “Zapper” should not be used as the Japanese product name without qualification.
The Zapper is a wired CRT optical detector. In *Duck Hunt*, trigger input and a brief brightness/target test determine a hit; the gun does not transmit a continuous pixel coordinate like a mouse. It has no recoil and normally supports one gun. Nintendo’s archived *Duck Hunt* manual documents Zapper play, while Nintendo’s corporate history establishes that Famicom was renamed NES for worldwide launch.[1][2]
Compatibility: standard CRT televisions are the intended display. Modern flat panels and most video converters do not reproduce the timing the game expects.
